SYNOPSIS: (From Goodreads)
What comes after heartbreak?
Lia and Beck. Beck and Lia. Despite army-brat life orbiting them in and out of each other’s worlds, Lia knows they are destined to be together. It’s more than their friendship and chemistry. When Lia’s mom was a teen, a fortune teller said her daughter would fall in love with her best friend’s son. Lia and Beck were always meant to be. Or so they thought.
When tragedy steals Beck away, Lia is devastated. She lived her life by her mom’s old fortune. If she was fated to be with Beck and he is gone, who is she supposed to be? And is there room in her broken heart for life, let alone new love?
REVIEW:
**A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**
Katy Upperman had me by the heart in this gut-wrenching story about friendship, love, and loss. I was not expecting this story to grab me like it did, but I will be putting it on my top ten list for the year!
The story follows Lia as she loses the love of her life, the person she planned everything with, and tries to move forward in life, while still honoring promises from before. Lia was such a great main character. Upperman did an incredible job of showing the emotional rollercoaster that was Lia and her choices. I loved the inner struggles she had and how we got to watch it play out in her thoughts and actions. The emotional turmoil could be felt in Upperman’s writing and you felt Lia’s struggle with moving on with her life and making new decisions versus following through with promises. If you didn’t feel those emotions as if they were your own, then I am not sure what you read.
I don’t always love books that run back and forth, but this one was done so smoothly and always at just the right time. I enjoyed the flashbacks with Beck and seeing how that relationship helped make Lia the person she is now. I loved the relationship with her new friend and how that is pushing her towards healing.
This book has everything I love in a perfect YA Novel. It pulls on the heartstrings, has you cheering for the main character, and hoping she comes out better in the end. I loved this book. It was easily one of the best books I’ve read this year and I very much look forward to reading more from Upperman in the future.
