Most know her as Lorraine Toussaint as Vee on Netflix’s hit drama “Orange is the New Black”. But in recent months you will know her on FOX’s new hit show “Rosewood”, which has recently been given an order for more scripting. You can also check her out in the upcoming film “The Night Before” alongside Seth Rogan. With so much under her belt, I’m not sure how she found time to talk with us, but we got the juice on all the upcoming projects.
KRISTIN: You are known for some incredible roles in movies and on TV. Let’s jump back real quick and have you tell us briefly what made acting your career?
LORRAINE: Thank you very much! Well initially I started in theatre as a Shakespearean actress before film and television. I’ve always been an artistic child growing up and I knew I wanted to act for as long as I can remember. It’s been a while back I don’t know the exact point where I knew this is what I wanted to do, I just couldn’t see myself anywhere else!
KRISITN: Everyone loved you as Vee on “Orange is the New Black”. What was it like for your time on the show and was it hard to leave?
LORRAINE: Yeah, let’s just say that Vee is pretty interesting character…vicious! It was a very fun and eye-opening experience playing her because I have never played a psychopath before! As an actor, I usually have to find something to love about my character in order to play her. When stepping into the mind of a psychopath, you realize that there is something missing in their brain that they do not understand the consequences of their actions- in a sense; Vee was technically innocent and did not fully grasp the repercussions of her malicious behavior. Oh man, Vee needed to go, WE needed to go! Vee did a lot of horrible things on the show and so it was probably best that she left…Ha! But all jokes aside, it was a great experience living through Vee, I have learned a lot about myself through her and I plan on using this self-realization to further myself in my career. It was an interesting six months to say the least!
KRISTIN: You are now slated to appear as the leading role on FOX’s new highly anticipated drama series Rosewood. Can you tell us about this show and where your character fits in?
LORRAINE: I play Morris’ mom who is soon to be a retired school principal. The show will be evenly divided between procedural and family drama. My character as Morris’ mother is quite lost as to who she is right now, with grown children who no longer need a “mommy” to a great extent. But soon Morris’ character begins to recognize there may be a place in his business for his mother as support. I am very excited to be playing this role, because I am a mother myself so it is something that comes naturally to me.
KRISTIN: What do you think is going to make people want to tune in to Rosewood over the other options they may have to watch?
LORRAINE: Well, being a mom myself and it being a huge and important part of who I am, made it easier for me to play the role of a strong, fierce, giving mom in Rosewood. It’s a completely different side of Vee in OITNB and I think people would be surprised to see how surprisingly normal I actually am! Rosewood is extremely interesting because it’s a show about life or death. The constant theme in the show is what would you do if you had a limited amount of time to live? You essentially see a man, Morris Chestnut, who is afraid to live because he’s afraid to make commitments and afraid to make investments in other people because he has a limited amount of time.
KRISTIN: You are also in the new film co-starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lizzy Caplan and more, “The Night Before” set to release in November. What’s this about and who do you play?
LORRAINE: Yes I am! The Night Before is about three best friends, (Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie) that have an annual tradition on Christmas Eve to party all night long. They find out that their yearly reunions might be coming to an end so they set out a plan to venture out on the night before Christmas to have their last debauchery. I play Anthony Mackie’s mother who again, comes naturally to me.
KRISTIN: The cast on both the show and the movie are incredible. What was it like working with these talented individuals?
LORRAINE: It was really nice working with them because they are just a lovely group of people who are extremely talented, professional, and hard working.
KRISTIN: You seem to have done everything from drama to crime to comedy. Do you have a favorite genre to work in?
LORRAINE: Ah…you can’t make me choose! Well, I guess I just love it all depending on the character I play. I love characters that are very layered and complex. It’s more exciting and different than any simple role- plus, I love a good challenge.
KRISTIN: This is already a lot, but do you have anything else we should be on the lookout for?
LORRAINE: As of right now, I think you covered everything! I don’t want to say too much because I might get in trouble…But just know that there is always something that you can look forward to!
KRISTIN: Where can fans keep up with you online?
LORRAINE: You can follow my official Twitter- @LPToussaint I post there as frequently as I can!
