INTERVIEW: ‘The Strain’ star Robin Atkin Downes

Robin Atkin Downes is the voice of The Master in the new FX series, ‘The Strain.’ Robin has brought to life some of the most memorable creatures in such films as: ‘Green Lantern Seventh Son’; ‘Underworld: Rise of the Lycans’; ‘Alien vs. Predator’; and ‘Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.’ He also lends his talent to the highly anticipated video game Metal Gear Solid “The Phantom Pain,” as Katsuhira Miller. Robin’s other acting credits include the hit Sci-fi series ‘Babylon 5,’ ‘Criminal Minds’ and ‘CSI.’

Picture 18Ashleigh: I saw a clip of you taking the Wondercon audience on a accent tour of the world. How did you learn to perform all of those different accents?

Robin: I am lucky to have been gifted with a good ear and the ability to mimic. If I can hear it… I can replicate it, whether it’s a dialect or just matching the tone of someones voice. I wish I could give you a formula. I think it comes from being surrounded by a diverse selection of British dialects growing up as a boy in England and listening to many different dialects around the world as I’ve grown, either from travels or watching television.

Ashleigh: You have a very impressive list of projects you’ve been involved with including: ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,’ and ‘Prometheus.’ Do you have a favourite role?

Robin: It’s very hard to pick a favourite. Perhaps ‘Babylon 5’ as it was my first series and was a dream come true to be on a Science Fiction show. I’ve enjoyed voicing creatures in several blockbuster movies – voicing Edward was one of my favourite and a role I have to thank Chris Jargo for. Of course working with Ridley Scott on ‘Prometheus’ was amazing… I think it’s the 5th picture I’ve worked on that he’s directed.

Ashleigh: You’ll be starring as the Master in Guillermo del Toro’s television show ‘The Strain.’ What can you tell us about this new show?

Robin: It’s revelatory in a horrific and suspenseful way. Guillermo really takes it to a whole new level. I’ve always been a big fan of Guillermo del Toro, ‘Pan’s Labryinth’ blew me away. The stories and the worlds that he’s created, he is truly a visionary! I can’t wait for people to see this series and I’m so happy to be working on such an amazing role…

Ashleigh: What sets apart this show from other paranormal dramas?The_Strain_Early_Promotional_Art

Robin: This ain’t your typical vampire story… The vampires are raw, real, disgusting and parasitic. They are very different from what we have been used to seeing on these romantic vampire shows. Also, there is a lot of science involved in the series. Many other paranormal series contain species that are unexplained… It is a very well written story with a very clear explanation of whats going one… It’s going to play upon your darkest fears!

Ashleigh: I literally cannot wait for this new show! What’s next for you?

Robin: I’m always working on many new projects that I can’t talk about because of NDA’s… But what I can say is, I’m in sword training to portray a master duelist in a new television series called ‘The World of Steam’ created by Matt King and co-directed by Academy Award winning Steve Preeg. I also have many new projects releasing this year…

It sounds like another exciting year for Robin Atkin Downes and we’d like to thank him for taking the time to chat with us! Make sure you tune into FX for ‘The Strain’ on July 13th and follow Robin on Twitter for all his latest news!
