If you’re looking for some new music that will soothe your soul then you will want to pick up anything by Julia Carlucci. Her incredible talent at songwriting partnered with her angelic and powerful voice makes for some pretty amazing music. Her new single is out and she has plenty to say about what she is working on next. Check out what she told us about her near future.
KRISTIN: You are a Toronto-based artist. Tell us how you got into music and how the Toronto music scene helped shape you as a musician.
JULIA: I practically begged my parents to put me in piano lessons when I was seven years old. I always loved to sing but not in front of people… I was really shy. So it wasn’t until I was twelve when I started vocal lessons. Fast forward a few years later when I started gigging in Toronto. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and play with so many incredible musicians. Culturally, the city is very diverse so I’ve been exposed to a lot of people and music from all over the world. That exposure has really influenced my approach to creating music.
KRISTIN: How would you describe your sound to someone who had never heard it before?
JULIA: My sound is a mix of influences from classic R&B to contemporary Pop music. If you like Adele and a sweet horn section, you’ll probably dig my music.
KRISTIN: You released your debut EP “For Me” in 2015 and have been working on more music since. How do you feel your music has grown?
JULIA: It’s grown quite a bit. Obviously I’m a bit older now and with that comes maturity in both my personal life and songwriting ability. Writing-wise, I’m definitely moving in a more contemporary Pop direction compared to my EP in 2015.
KRISTIN: You have a new song out called Take Me Down that is just released recently. What has the feedback been from fans?
JULIA: People have been incredibly supportive. I’ve received nothing but positive feedback about both the song and the video
KRISTIN: What made this song stand out as the next single for you?
JULIA: This song had been sitting around for a couple of years. I knew it was a good song but wasn’t sure what to do with it. My producer really liked it as well and thought it would be a killer first single. We talked about it some more and I started to get excited about the overall sound/ideas we had for the video. After discussing it for a while, it seemed to make the most sense.
KRISTIN: This has been described as the “Adele-inspired track”. Can you explain that?
JULIA: Well when I wrote the song I envisioned huge drums and an epic clap breakdown similar to “Rolling in The Deep”. We actually used “Rolling In the Deep” as our sonic reference when the song was mixed and mastered. Adele’s team is really good at blending real instruments with contemporary production and that’s what I wanted to do with “Take Me Down”.
KRISTIN: With the new single now out, what is your next step? Are you working on another album or EP? Planning any touring?
JULIA: I’m working on my next single actually. I’d like to put out a few more singles before I dive into an EP or full-length album. As huge of a project “Take Me Down” was, I realized I really love producing videos and visual content in general so I’d like to do more of that in the near future.
KRISTIN: Where can we keep up with what’s coming up next? Website or social media?
