Janina Gavankar has been seen on the small screen on many popular TV shows from ‘The Gates’, ‘Arrow’, ‘True Blood’, and more. But now we see her as Officer Meredith Bose on NBC’s show ‘The Mysteries of Laura’. On the show, she plays not only the pretty face, but also the offices secret weapon… video game lover and all around bad ass cop. We got to talk to Gavankar about the show and this is what she had to say.
KRISTIN: You have been acting for some time and have been on some of the most popular shows on television, including The Gates, Arrow, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, and now The Mysteries of Laura. What made you want to start acting?
JG: I was in my high school musical. We were doing “West Side Story”, I was playing Maria, and as I reached out to Tony, I felt heart break. But not mine, my character’s. It was an out of body experience, and it’s a dragon I’ve been chasing ever since.
KRISTIN: You play Meredith Bose on The Mysteries of Laura. For those who may not be aware, explain your character and their role in the story?
JG: Debra Messing plays Laura, on our show. This show is Columbo, if Columbo was a single mom. Meredith is a detective, at the precinct, helping to solve murders.
KRISTIN: Your character is kind of the sarcastic and straight forward officer, but in recent episodes we have learned you have a deeper side. Are we going to see more of that come out this season?
JG: Oh, I hope so! (laughs) The writers made her a gamer, when they found out how serious of one I am, myself. I am so happy when I get to explore Meredith’s inner weirdness. I look forward to going deeper into her backstory, to see exactly why she’s so uptight.
KRISTIN: This whole show is based on an officer who is juggling her work, her crumbled marriage, and two young children. There is a lot of reality in that situation. Are we going to get to see more of the home life of everyone else and what makes everyone tick in coming episodes?
JG: Again, I sincerely hope so! This show is more mystery than it is home life, but we just got a full season order, so there’s the opportunity to explore more character life.
KRISTIN: What do you think it is about this show that everyone likes so much?
JG: 3 things: Debra Messing is a huge star and has been for over 15 years, people love murder mysteries, and we bring you laughs along the way.
KRISTIN: You always seem to be doing some project, so we have to ask if there are any other projects we can be on the lookout for?
JG: (Laughs) Don’t fault me for getting bored easily! I have two incredibly exciting things. I’m IN Far Cry 4. Most people reading this probably already know I’m a serious gamer. To be a part of such an immense art-filled experience has me living a freakin’ DREAM. It just won “Best Shooter” at The Game Awards, last week. Crazy.
Also! I’m developing a lifestyle brand and site called altFound.com and will be launching it early next year. Think of it as the anti GOOP.com. Basically, the geeks have won, but there is no destination for the grown geek. I feel like too many of the things geared towards us is childish or nostalgic. We’re grown and fly, and our nerd-interests aren’t stuck in the past. I’m making what I think is missing, on the interweb.
You can sign up to be one of the first to be a part of it, early!
KRISTIN: Where can we follow you online to keep up with what you’re working on? Website or social media?
So there you have it everyone. Make sure to tune in to episodes of ‘The Mysteries of Laura’ every Wednesday at 8 pm EST.
