Well, here it is finally. After sickness, busyness, the holiday and a large amount of procrastination my Top 10 book round-up of 2019. With 112 books read in 2019, it took me a hot minute to whittle my list down to 10, but I finally did it. Without any further ado my top 10 books.
Rill/May is born into a river family in Tennessee. She and her siblings are ripped from her family and sold to families without children. Avery finds a picture and discovers her Grandmother’s story. This book made my list because even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the book I loved the premise of it and the mystery behind every corner. It kept me guessing the entire time as to what the true story would actually be.

Sarah is stuck in a rut. She wants her life to be exciting but just can’t seem to do it. Her friend in Paris suggests a change. Switch bookshops for 6 months. Sarah without even thinking about it says yes. So begins a journey of a lifetime. This book made my list because of the whole entire idea of owning a bookstore. I am a self-confessed bibliophile. I love books. A far far far out dream of mine is to actually own a bookstore or something of the sort. I love the fact that this story takes place in Paris. The author wrote it in such a way that you are actually transported to Paris with just her words.

Ellie is a party girl who travels the world on her daddy’s money. It’s not until he cuts her off unless she stops does she return home. She finds out her dad has cancer she decides to go to nursing school. Surprisingly, she finds her passion. At her father’s passing, she inherits all his money. She takes a job at a hospice center. Unbenounced to everyone she begins fulfilling people’s wish lists. This book made my list because it was a feel-good book that we desperately need. Every single task that she did for everyone had me smiling. I couldn’t wait to read what she was going to do next. She was so sweet and caring to every person in her care. The fact that it was also medically related also had me even more interested. Some of the things that happened to Ellie had me rolling. As a person who worked in an ER, I could relate to some of her escapades.

Vasya is a wild child. She loves to explore the woods and talk to all the spirits that she finds. She would prefer to spend her time outdoors exploring than actually doing housework. She runs away one night and gets rescued by Morozko. The adventure she has is amazing. This made my list because the fairy tale aspect of it is so good. I had been wanting to read it for a while and when it was my book club book I was so excited. The Russian aspect of it made it more intriguing since my two sisters are from Russia. The faeries and various house “demons” that Vasya can see are really interesting. She can hear and talk to them.

DI Callenach is fresh from France after a sexual assault forced him to leave his job. He is on his first case. A burnt pile of remains with no clues. As women begin to disappear it is apparent there is a serial killer on the loose. This book made my list because it is something that I normally would not have read and loved every minute of it. I went on to purchase the rest of the books in the series and have already read the next two after this first one. It is a thriller that you have no idea what is coming next. It kept me guessing until basically the last few chapters as to who the killer actually was and what was actually happening. I have recommended the book to several people already. I can’t wait to read the other books in the series.

Bernadett was an amazing architect in Los Angeles until that came crashing down around her. She and her husband moved to Seattle started a family and she poured herself into caring for their daughter who had a heart defect at birth. Things slowly come unwound around her. She escapes without telling anyone to Antarctica. This book made my list because I could feel what it felt like to lose yourself once you stop doing what you love. She stopped creating to take care of her daughter. She needs to create things to make sure that she feels whole. Her husband kind of assumes that she is crazy and attempts to have her institutionalized instead of realizing what she truly needed was support and creating things. As moms, we slowly lose ourselves caring for someone else.

Gillian thinks she has her life all worked out until the man that she thought she would spend the rest of her life with gets caught by her having sex with another woman at his birthday party. She goes to seek solace with her dad and grandmother. Her dad finds a picture of a woman with a nazi and the life she thought she knew gets a whole lot more exciting. This book made my list because the story was just so well written. It was a mystery and a romance all tied into one. It showed the atrocities of WW2 and how it changed and broke up families all at the same it. I was left speechless by the twist in the book that I did not see coming.

Diana is a witch. One that was never properly trained to use her powers. She only uses them occasionally like when she can’t reach a book on the top shelf. She finds herself being followed by Matthew a famous geneticist who wants to test her blood and who also happens to be a vampire. Once she is tested all bets are off and she has quite the adventure. This book made my list because personally I thought it was utterly amazing. I read it in several days once I got it on a roll. I kept having to stop to read other books that I had due for review. It ticked all my boxes. Romance, mystery, action, and adventure. I mean who doesn’t love a good book that has vampires, witches, and daemons? I have the other two books that are in this series and plan on reading them this year. I also have downloaded the TV show that they have recorded now, while I have yet to watch it, I am sure that it will be just as good as the book.

Kya was abandoned by her mother when she just walked out when Kya was very young. She was “raised” by her father who preferred to drink and gamble in town instead of tending his kids. One by one Kya’s siblings left until it was just her and her father. She attempted to care for her father until her father finally left never to be heard from again. Kya is left to navigate life alone. This book made my list because of the message. A girl so misunderstood by a town that they call her “marsh-girl” without even getting to know her. They snub her and think she is trash. This girl raises herself and pulls herself up by the bootstraps and becomes a well-published artist. I wanted to care for her when everyone else abandons her. The author wrote the seashore in such a way that I could smell the salt air as I read the book. The descriptions of the marsh and the sea were breathtaking. I could see every inch of it in my mind’s eye.

Tara Westover was 17 when she first stepped foot in a classroom and that was when she stepped foot into a classroom at BYU. Her father refused to send her and her siblings to school. She taught herself everything that she needed to know in order to get a perfect score on the SATs in order to get a free ride at BYU. She makes it all the way to the classrooms at Oxford. This book made my list because it is a make yourself into something even though you were raised with nothing. The whole entire time I was reading it, I had to keep telling myself that this is a true story. All of this happened to this woman. As the story goes on I couldn’t believe that each and every one of these things happened. It was definitely a pull yourself up by your bootstraps and charge in headlong and work to become something.
