‘Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” is a New York Times Bestseller written by the incomparable Mindy Kaling.
I have been a long, LONG time fan of Mindy Kaling’s so it is very weird that it took me this long to pick up her first book… I mean, what was I waiting for? I saw the light and bought this book on a sunny, Saturday afternoon while strolling around Target. From the first few pages I knew that Mindy and I would be BFF’s forever… if only I knew her in real life! I read through this book in just a few days and proceeded to tell everyone (women and MEN) that I ran into how much I loved this book and insisted (perhaps like a weirdo) that they go immediately to local bookstore and pick up a copy for themselves… after all there is no way I was lending my copy to them, that would be ludicrous! Mindy talks candily throughout this book about love, sex, body issues and Hollywood, which basically makes up for a girls night out all contained neatly within 222 pages and I didn’t even need to put pants on!
I don’t think that Mindy (yeah we are totally on a first name basis) intended this book to be a How To Be Fabulous manual but there is definitely that appeal to it… Especially to all of us 30 something single ladies who need to remember that “sometimes you just have to put on lip-gloss and pretend to be psyched.”
I think I can sum up to book with the following quote about Mindy wants to hear about your marriage… it is now my life goal to obtain this kind of relationship…
I don’t want to hear about the endless struggles to keep sex exciting, or the work it takes to plan a date night. I want to hear that you guys watch every episode of The Bachelor together in secret shame, or that one got the other hooked on Breaking Bad and if either watches it without the other, they’re dead meat. I want to see you guys high-five each other like teammates on a recreational softball team you both do for fun.
Overall, this book was witty, real, hilarious and something that all women need to read… you can trust my judgement even though Mindy and I are BFF’s… in my head!
